Dan Styffe will perform solo and chamberpieces at four different festivals/concert series in Norway in March, 2010: solo and chamber music by A. Pärt and G. Kurtag and Norwegian composers A. Bibalo and A. Nordheim, the Prokofiev quintet and the Saint  Saens septet.


On March 4, 2010, in the Madrid Auditorio Nacional, Stefano Scodanibbio will conduct “Composition No. 2 - Dies Irae” by Galina Ustvolskaya for 8 double basses, piano and percussion. The featured bass ensemble is Ludus Gravis, led by Daniele Roccato. Music by Arvo Pärt, John Cage and Scodanibbio will also be on the program. The Ustvolskaya will be repeat on April 13, 2010, in Macerata Italy, at the Rassegna di Nuova Musica.


The Arizona Bass Players Festival and Workshop for bass players (double bass and electric bass) of all ages and abilities, March 5-8, 2010 at Pima Community College West Center for the Arts/Recital Hall. Workshops are open to registered participants, and evening concerts are open to the public (donation at the door). The faculty includes avant-garde multi-media bassist Patrick Neher, professor at the University of Arizona, and David Murray, internationally known soloist and professor of bass at Butler University. There will also be open jam-sessions, a special clinician’s forum on the music business and bass maintenance, and a free concert with clinicians and others playing bass ensemble music in jazz and new music genres, and a performance of the winner of the 2009 Arizona Bass Players Solo Competition, Alexander Jacobsen, a student at the Curtis Institute of Music. Join Jeremy Kurtz and the San Diego State University  bass department for a free Tango masterclass with the Andés Martin, Monday, March 8th, 7 to 9 PM, M113 (Rhapsody Hall) at the SDSU School of Music and Dance building. Bassist and composer Andrés Martín, a native of Buenos Aires, is currently a member of the Orquesta de Baja California (OBC) in Tijuana.  He has extensive performance experience as an orchestral musician and soloist, and is a founding member of the chamber group "Cuatro Para Tango." His masterclass at San Diego State will include a short lecture and demonstration of traditional tango techniques that will be of interest to anyone with an interest in Tango. The 6th Biennial Hawaii Contrabass Festival will take place March 21-28, 2010 in Honolulu, Hawaii. An intensive week of major bassitude features group lessons, masterclasses, bass choir, lecture-demos and concerts.  2010 faculty includes François Rabbath, Paul Ellison, John Clayton, David Gage, Mark Dresser, Marc Marder, Kurt Muroki, Todd Seeber, Alexander Hanna, Shawn Conley, George Rubino, George Wellington, Jr., Randy Wong and Victor Wooten. Bass players of all ages and abilities are welcome. hawaiicbfest@gmail.com

The Richard Davis Foundation for Young Bassists, Inc. will hold its 17th Annual Bass Conference on Easter weekend, April 2-3, 2010 at the Pyle Center in Madison, Wisconsin. Anthony Manzo, bassist with the New Century Chamber Orchestra and new faculty at the University of Maryland School of Music, will be performing with the St. Lawrence String Quartet and pianist Pedja Muzijevic on the Stanford Lively Arts series in Palo Alto, CA on Sunday, April 18th at 2:30 pm in Dinkelspiel Auditorium. The program will include Lanner's "Die Werber" Waltzes and Schubert's Trout Quintet.


Volkan Orhon will host the 6th Iowa City Bass Day on Saturday, April 24, 2010 in Music West Interim Building at The University of Iowa School of Music. This year’s guest artist Nicholas Walker will play a recital on April 23rd in the Riverside Recital Hall at 7:30 PM. The Pirastro Strings Elite Soloists Program provides free tuition, room and board for 5 participants selected by audition to study with Jeff Bradetich June 1-5, 2010. Daily lessons and solo classes are held in a highly individualized program with a focus on developing an artist's level approach to solo performance. To qualify, students must have a full program of solo works ready for study and performance.

Participants in the program include current members of the Detroit Symphony, National Symphony Orchestra, Concertgebouw Orchestra of Amsterdam, Singapore Symphony, Ft. Worth Symphony and the Honolulu Symphony Orchestra.

The Bradetich Foundation announces the inaugural International Double Bass Solo Competition, June 16-20, 2010, hosted by the University of North Texas College of Music in Denton, Texas, USA. The Competition is open to anyone under the age of 35 as of the first day of the competition June 16, 2010, and who has not given a formal New York City debut concert. The International Double Bass Solo Competition endeavors to identify emerging international artists and to provide career advancement and leadership opportunities. First place includes a $10,000 cash prize. The First annual Bass Coalition Summer Bass Workshop and Solo Competition will take place June 24-26, 2010 on the campus of Shenandoah University-Conservatory in Winchester, VA, approximately one hour west of Washington, D.C.  Clinicians will include Rufus Reid, David MurrayInez Wyrick and Donovan Stokes.  The Solo Competition will take place on June 24, 2010 with a top prize of $1000.  The three day workshop will be packed with ensembles, masterclasses, one-to-one instruction and concerts. The 17th annual Oklahoma City University Summer Double Bass Camp will be held July 18-24 at the Wanda L. Bass Music Center on the campus of Oklahoma City University.
Directed by John Schimek, Professor of Double Bass at OCU, the week-long camp for high school-college age students will offer opportunities for students of all abilities. Included are daily classes in technique, audition music, chamber music and each day concludes with the "Bass Choir". Non-bass playing teachers are invited to participate to improve their bass playing and teaching

The 4th World Bass Festival in Wroclaw, Poland, Irena Olkiewicz, director, will be held  August 8-14, 2010. The roster of classical and jazz guest artists presenting concerts and masterclasses include Tom Martin, Joel Quarrington, Rufus Reid, Klazz Brothers & Cuba Percussion, Catalin Rotaru, Kristin Korb, Hiroshi Ikematsu, Tadeusz Gorny, Eric Hansen, Stefano Scodanibbio, Thierry Barbe, Barry Green, Miloslav Jelinek, Irena Olkiewicz, Ekkehard Beringer, Jakub Olejnik, Bassiona Polacca, Petya Bagovska, Adam Skrzypek, Miloslav Gajdoś, Dan Styffe, Patrick Neher, Hans Roelofsen, Aleksander Mikolajczyk, Gunars Upatnieks, Esra Gul Atalay, Yun Xia Hou, Song Yi, Shen Dongwen, Andrzej Dechnik, Grzegorz Frankowski, Kazimierz Cyna, Dominik Schulz, Pawel Jablczynski, Robert Piekos and Ryszard Kusek.  There will be a one-day competition for classical and jazz bassists offering prizes and certificates, and the festival will also include exhibits by bass makers and double bass shops from England, Germany, France, Italy, the USA and China. Registration for players is 150 Euros or 100 Euros to audit, with an administration fee of 10 Euros. The entry fee for the competition is 25 Euros. The registration deadline is June 30, 2010. The International Johann Matthias Sperger Society, www.spergergesellschaft.de, announces the 6th International Sperger Competition for Double Bass, to be held September 12-19, 2010, in Schloss Burg-Namedy/Andernach a.Rhein, Germany, Nikolaus Harnoncourt, Patron. The competition will be limited to 50 participants. The new deadline for applications is August 15, 2010, age limit 35. First prize is 5,000 Euros. Chris White, Virginia Symphony assistant principal bassist, will be joined by VSO violinist Pavel Ilyashov in two performances of Bottesini's Grand Duo Concertante with the orchestra. Performances are on November 18, 2010 at St. Bede's Church in Williamsburg, VA, and November 20th at Regent University in Virginia Beach.
